when Darwin goes looking at the Cambrian explosion, he predicted a progression... but there wasn't one there. The record goes empty... soft-bodied plans is what the scientists suggest, therefore leaving no fossil impressions... but I have often wondered to myself, maybe, just maybe it could've been due to a shift in the earth's climate... and while a plush area was turned to desert, it gave the misleading appearance that it was a "mass extinction" when elsewhere on the earth, organisms were thriving. Maybe some died out, but others continued to thrive.
Darwinists themselves admit, even despite extinction theories they all share, that some kinds of species in fact, lived on...
Genesis is emphatic that species came "... after their kind . . ." which is a strong implication for evolution (fossil progression).
But if I read the text correctly, God saying, "Let the Earth bring forth .... after his kind..." vs. "God created whales"... one seems to imply something allowed to happen on its own, while the other implies direct act of creation... well, if God did things that way, it would explain God allowing the extinction of an estimated 95% species that ever lived. It wasn't because they were "bad designs". Things just worked out that way.
Whatever the case may be the chronology in Genesis is identical to what Science has discovered through Paleontology.
Often when a peculiar issue is raised in science, "expert opinions" are offered up, that were never considered before by mainstreamers, that deviate from the Status Quo understanding of how things really are/were.
For instance... about the atmosphere, one crazy fellow who suggested "What If" Dinosaurs had evolved into intelligent beings, (a scientist I presume) what would those bipedal dinosaurs look like -- I think he was suggesting also, the reason the dinosaurs grew so very big, in comparison to brain-size, was some-thing to do with the way the early Earth atmosphere was... something to do with radiation... and caused creatures to grow to enormous size.
However, there was evidently a change in the atmosphere over the past 100 thousands of years, where animals (including humans) typically became smaller...
The atmosphere of early earth would not be identical to what it is today.
Even today there are variations, i.e., El Nino (related to hurricanes), and ozone/global warming changes. Complex details are overlooked by the score.
There can be serious, serious alterations in the atmosphere... and these things are seldom considered when Darwinists think of their fairy-tale impressions of a world way, way, way back then... compared to what they see when they look out a window. So stop criticizing Creationists for only imagining a "ready made" world... a "ready made" plant and animal kingdom... Darwinists think the atmosphere and sun came ready made too.

(That is NOT Adam (the first man to till the ground/invention of Agriculture -- Adam was hand-formed, long after the Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal -- so God knew the blueprint of a human!!), that was the prehistoric man back during the Tertiary). Early man did have the ability to create, use tools, to think, conquest... all the things that set man apart from animals. Man was superior to animals... and dominated them. All the things Genesis 1 states. Some verses imply God states, "Let the earth bring forth..." and others God becomes directly involved, and implies direct act of creation. Man and whales, are sort of "out there" in the Genesis text. God doesn't even bother to mention fish. Fish are lumped in with all varieties of "moving creature". One special documentary on PBS -- revealed the huge feat that was involved with arriving to a "moving" creature. The sponge was the first true animal, and it did not move. Starfish was an example of one of the first creatures that had the ability to move. And, Genesis specifies the "moving creature" as the first to emerge in Day #5 (after the creation of sunlight).
I think I have sent you (and your Agnosticism) overwhelming evidence there is substance to Genesis. It is difficult to believe such a manuscript ended up in the same book with men who praised idolatry and adultery(his highness Solomon, who has a front row seat in hell reserved with his name on it). Water would've been primarily "hot steam" in the earliest period of Earth's evolution... cooling would cause the effect I've shown in the video. (We see it happening even today... in the form of water molecules/steam... forming clouds...which cool and become heavy and fall in the form of rain to the ground.

The Original Hebrew
There was a definate cooling phase early in Earth history, where _all waters_ were in the form of hot steam just above the boiling rock/lava, and no possibility of cool oceans to exist, yet. The formation of "seas" are mentioned in the next phase, the third day, or third "epoch of creation" / as Louis Agassiz might call it)... I was made aware very young, that when you see italicized text as in italicized it denotes a word thrown in, to better clarify the original Hebrew.
Where the text is saying "above" the firmament and "below" the firmament.. it could have originally meant "upper level atmosphere" and "lower level atmosphere"... as in "above, inside the firmament" and "below inside the firmament"... but it is difficult to tell. However the case may be... there was _ABSOLUTELY_ a division of waters when the cooling phase of earth began. Because, science itself teaches that at one point, the earth was a chunk of boiling lava... all the earth (i.e., Hawaii) is what volcanos have spewed to the surface, and cooled... so with that in mind, we can deduce the early earth was INHOSPITABLY HOT at one time, and surrounded by a _solid body of Hot, Heavy Steam_. It was indeed divided to allow ground water, and humidity (in the form of clouds)...
Science certainly teaches it *was*... and still is to this day. Imagine what would happen if you scraped away that thin layer of crust.. See attached image. . . there was no "ocean" on that thing, nor was there an atmosphere, in early earth history... just hot, heavy steam blown off from volcanic activity. Even that the verse states "firmament, (an expansion) in the _midst_ of the waters" tells us there was a solid body of water, and it divided IN THE MIDST (MIDDLE) OF IT, into upper level and lower level waters.
It is the atmosphere the Hebrew is speaking of.

The Hebrew appears to indicate something in the atmosphere (a little more detailed than simply saying "Atmosphere" in the general sense)... but a specific layer in the atmosphere, responsible for actually cooling and causing rain to fall....
ANSWERING THE RIDDLE:
The firmament is an "expansion" that caused "hot steam" to divide into upper level water (clouds and humidity), and lower level water (ground waters).
It must be a layer in the atmosphere, perhaps, that causes cooling of water...

Ask any Meteorologist if the Troposphere is not a SOLID "structure"... in fact, the Stratosphere/Troposphere is a more "solid" scientific case, than any dome in Babylonian mythology. Meanwhile, I fully understand why most people will not subscribe to my views. Foremost, it requires a minimal amount of knowledge of several scientific fields of study and secondly, reasoning that requires "thinking outside the box". Lastly, I'm not proposing to have any "One and Only Truth(TM)". Just presenting scientific facts whilst challenging long-held cherished falsehoods as well as faith in people to exercise critical reasoning and make up their own minds, and whatever conclusion people may arrive at is fine with me.
